As our direction is changing in 2007, we no longer need the volumes of voluntary workers that were required post tsunami. These days our needs are more tailored to specific skill sets. We tend to recruit through the local work force as part of our commitment to setting up self sustainable projects.
There are still some voluntary positions for certain projects including Twins and the TCP.
Location
ASL’s operating constraints are largely in the coastal areas in the south west of Sri Lanka between the towns of Kosgoda and Hambantota in the Island’s Southern Province. Our head office and nerve centre is located at Galle and there is a regional office at Tangalle for our Twin’s project.
Infrastructure and physical conditions are challenging: applicants must be healthy physically fit and be aware and prepared for the stricture of living in the sub- tropics in sometimes isolated and demanding conditions.
Duration
While all positions require a minimum commitment of three months, applicants able to offer periods of service in excess of this will provide us with significant advantages, as would volunteers with Sinhala language skills. All staff currently work a minimum of 5 ½ days per week.
Remuneration
All positions are voluntary and there is no living allowance or personal expenses provided. ASL will recover any expenses that are incurred while doing field work or any other work on behalf of ASL.
We can identify suitable and cheap accommodation in the various guesthouses that we have rebuilt. Airfare, mobile phone including international phone calls and medical cover are NOT provided.
All volunteers must have full medical and travel insurance for the duration of the stay. ASL will take no responsibility for cost incurred should an emergency arise.
Please note that there will be NO opportunity for people to volunteer with children on our Trauma Relief Programme.
Voluntary work at ASL is a rewarding and character building opportunity.
