Project Update

Current Projects

ASL is currently supporting the following projects for children:

1. The Rainbow Centre:
A daycare centre for severely deprived street children in Bentota. (For more information click here)

2. ASL Pre School Building Programme
As part of ASL’s commitment to supporting the development of the children of Sri Lanka we have an ongoing Pre School Building Programme.  To date, ASL has built 8 preschools, all of which are now open and educating children from the ages of 3 – 5yrs.  To view a pictorial report of the schools which have been built so far, please click here.

3. Sri Lanka’s Second Children’s Hospital at Kalutura:
Due to Planning restrictions, construction work has been delayed. The land has been cleared in anticipation and we are confident that the work will begin very soon. ASL has donated $50,000 USD to this project. Please see www.chtaf.org

4. ASL School Projects

Creative Writing Competition:

ASL Twins is using the Galle Literary Festival as a venue to announce the winning essay in our Creative Writing Competition that ran for two months under strict exam conditions and included 50 schools. This is an event that was written in English medium and is part of our commitment to developing English language exchange both in Sri Lanka and overseas.

Galle Zonal School Debating Competition:

The School Debating Competition is an ongoing project that involves over 50 schools in the Galle area. If the competition is a success in the Galle area, we will extend this to the Matara and Tangalle regions.

Both of these projects have the full backing of the Southern Provincial Education Department.

Mr. Dinil D Liyanage
Sinhala ISA (In-Service Advisor)

" In reference to the Debating workshop and competitions."
“No one has ever organized such a competition before, so you are doing an excellent thing.   Many events are done for National schools and I am very happy at the fact that you are doing this for Provincial schools.”

Kalahe Sri Sumangaladaya School

" …a valuable opportunity for the children."

Pilana Takshila School

“Our school does not currently have a debating team, so this will be a really motivating event for them.  I am happy that this opportunity has been made available for our students.”

Uluvitike M.Vschool

“this will be very useful to improve our students debating skills.”

Hiyare M.V. School

“Everyone wants to develop education but few people recognize just how important debating skills are for education and personal development.  This is a hugely beneficial initiative for students.”

Akmeemana M.V. School

“These initiatives are valuable in developing children’s minds.  This is a great thing.”

Past Projects:

  1. Ruhunu State Receiving Home:
ASL held a charity dinner to specifically raise funds for The RSRH and was one of the first organisations to support this project. Click here to view before and after photos.

Our involvement with this project was finished in March 2005, after a report in the press called into question the suitability of one of the Managers.

Donors of unspent funds were notified and agreed for their funds to be reallocated to other projects.

  2. Pahumine House
ASL provided funds for the building and equipping of a wing of this home. This was to allow space for up to 100 orphaned children from Sri Lanka’s ethnic minorities, many of whom had been badly affected in the Eastern Province.

  3. Swim Lanka
This project provided transportable swimming pools to villages around the coast, helping to provide swimming and water confidence. As a result, over 10,000 children have received swimming confidence certificates through this programme.

  4. Weligama Trauma Project
The Weligama Trauma Project completed its last children’s programme on Sri Lankan New Years Day 2006. From August 2005, we had run children’s programmes twice a week in three different displacement camps in the Weligama District. These programmes often had over 60 children in attendance at one time. From April through to December 2006, the team shifted their attention to the children of Nugagahahena Village Mirissa and continued the same programmes. ASL has now finished all children’s trauma programmes.
